Each week, the West of Ireland continues to grow, not in size but in the talents of our community members and in the ways we support each other and Project Children. We have diverse events going on every day, wonderful volunteers who are the face and soul of the WOI, and great friends who come by to talk, dance, and participate. Additionally, your donations make it possible for us to send Project Children roughly $1000US a month. Real world money that is put to very good use improving the lives of children in difficult circumstances. Thank you, everyone.

Highlights of recent and upcoming events:

- The West of Ireland Step Dancers made their debut on Sunday, in a joint appearance with the Scotland sim’s pipe band! Daisyblue Hefferman, Derry McMahon, Seana McMillan, Feargal Flanagan, and Diane McMahon put on an amazing performance, with dances coordinated and choreographed by Daisyblue.

- In addition to his wonderful live concerts (on hiatus while his wrist heals), Tone Uriza is now DJ’ing at Nancy Blake’s, usually on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7pm. Tone’s blues collection is unrivaled and his shows are wonderful, both as a chance to dance and as a way of learning more about this style of music.

- Slip Stringfellow, appearing each Thursday night at Nancy’s, again thrilled audiences with his playing of traditional Irish music t his week. I have a soft spot for Slip’s fiddle playing, but he’s equally as amazing on the flute and guitar.

- Syd Goff, a long term and beloved member of our WOI family, is back in full force, DJ’ing Wednesdays at noon at Nancy’s and Saturdays at 11am on Bundoran Beach. You’ll also find him holding impromptu DJ events on the deck at Nancy’s at various times during the week, greeting new visitors and giving us all a chance to dance to his mixture of classic rock and experiemental music.

- Sunday was our first Dancing at the Crossroads event, held in the Celtic Crossing Marketplace and DJ’ed with skill and style by Lyndzee McMillan. The dance drew a huge crowd and introduced people to not only wonderful Celtic rock but also the marketplace itself. Thanks to Lyndzee and to the great hosts for the event, Addie Dollinger and Aislinn Heron.

- In response to requests to hold weddings here in the WOI, we now have a great wedding planning and support team, headed up by Padula Bing. The time is fast approaching for the first WOI mock wedding ceremony to be held on Sept 30, from 11-12 SL on Clare Island. The happy couple is none other than Derry McMahon and Professor Maertens. Reception following at Nancy’s 12-2pm SL featuring DJ Syd Goff. For those of you who just can’t stop dancing, DJ Lyndzee McMillan will play an afterparty from 2-3pm slt. Please mark your calendars! Please notify Queen Hostess Kloacen Dagger if you are interested in assisting during the event. Padula Bing also needs some assistance in building a reception canopy. Please let her know if you can provide help in the way of materials or building skills. The canopy will be a simple wooden frame draped in white sheer fabric.

- On Sept 17th, the Storytelling Guild of SL will return to Neart Island at 7pm for an open mic storytelling event! Bring your stories and participate either via voice or text. Trinity Fitzpatrick and Padula Bing will be hosts for this event.

Thank you again for making the West of Ireland a great place to be.

Despite the end of summer doldrums, the West of Ireland had another busy week.

- Lyndzee McMillan debuted as a DJ at Nancy’s, with events featuring styles of music including Celtic rock and traditonal Irish music. Large crowds were impressed by the depth of Lyndzee’s collection and her ability of weave together an interesting and cohesive set. Bravo, Lyndzee, and a belated Happy Birthday!

- Gilbert Sapwood also debuted as a DJ at Nancy’s, bringing a fresh new sound that featured world music and independent record labels. HIs unique and interesting mixes kept us dancing. Thanks, Gilbert!

- Slip Stringfellow, a beloved regular at Nancy’s and a long time supporter of Project Children, played live traditional Irish music on FOUR different instruments on Thursday. If you haven’t made it to one of Slip’s concerts, you’re missing not only wonderful and well played music but a guided tour of the forms of traditional Irish music. Phenomenal, as always!

- Tone Uriza, still recovering from his broken wrist and also a long time friend of Project Children, graced Nancy’s with two evenings of DJ’ing some of the best blues music you’ll hear anywhere in SL or RL. Because of the success of these evenings, Tone will now be a regular DJ at Nancy’s! We’re looking forward to dancing to his amazing sets, drawn from a deep and diverse collection of blues music in all it’s forms.

- The Saturday Bundoran Beach Party took on an international flavor this week. While Syd was off on a secret RL mission, DJ DanTr Runo stepped in and rocked Bundoran with a mix of rock, pop, and international music. It was a great dance and we are very grateful to DanTr for working so hard for Project Children.

- The Storytelling Guild of Second Life held their first meeting on Neart on Monday. Not only did they get a lot of work done, but they also shared great stories that touched cultures around the globe. Thanks to Gilbert and DaisyBlue for all their work leading up to and during the event. The evening was capped by an outstanding birthday dance for Lyndzee on the deck at Nancy’s. One of the results of this meeting is that the Guild will be holding a regular storytelling event at Neart on the 3rd Monday of each month, with the possibility of special events scheduled at other times. The first of these monthly events will be on September 17th. Details will we sent out closer to the date of the event.

- A special event will be held on September 9th: Dancing at the Crossroads. Please join us at Noon slt for an afternoon of Celtic Rock, world music, dancing, and craic DJ’ed by Lyndzee McMillan and hosted by Addie Dollinger and Aislinn Heron. Dance, have fun, learn more about Project Children, and enjoy the traditional Irish countryside and Celtic Crossing market place.

- The Cezanne Barbosa exhibit continues at the Keeler Gallery. If you haven’t had a chance to visit, please do. Cezanne’s paintings capture the spirit and beauty of the real West of Ireland.

Thanks,

This week in the West of Ireland, we had new events, old favorites, and got to see an old friend in a new way.

- Syd Goff, a long time friend of Project Children and the West of Ireland, has returned! Syd will now be DJ’ing two events each week, his beloved and long running Saturday beach party and a new event at Nancy Blake’s on Wednesdays at noon SLT. You’ll also be seeing him on the back deck frequently, hosting impromtu DJ hours and welcoming old and new friends to the pub. His events this week were well attended, despite SL maintenance and teleport issues. Welcome back, Syd!

- Slip Stringfellow gave a wonderful concert on Thursday, playing traditional Irish music on the flute, fiddle, and guitar. As always, Slip was amazing, not only with his mastery of the instruments but also with his knowledge of the history and technical detail of traditional Irish music. This event is always a treat and we’re grateful for Slip sharing his music with us.

- Seano Osumi’s surfing classes on Crab Island are still going strong. Seano is not only an accomplished surfer, but a skilled instructor (one of the best in SL). If you haven’t had a chance to take one of his classes, I highly recommend it. The classes are free and loaner boards are provided. IM Robin Choche to reserve a space. Class size is limited to assure personal attention from Seano.

- Mash Rhode, genuine Dublin rocker and long time friend and supporter of Project Children and the West of Ireland, broke new ground this week! Mash and Edmund Collins, also an accomplished musician from Dublin, gave their first joint concert in SL on the back deck of Nancy Blake’s! Mash and Eddie played guitar favorites and kept a standing room only crowd at Nancy’s mesmerized for two hours.

- Storytelling will be coming back to the West of Ireland! After the overwhelming success of Gilbert Sapwood’s storytelling event last week, storytelling will now become a regular event. Please watch the event board and this update for an announcement of the schedule.

- After the Selena Toland and Jimbo Qinin’s beautiful wedding last week and subsequent interest, Padula Bing has agreed to coordinate weddings for the West of Ireland. She’ll be ably assisted by Addie Dollinger and Bess Beattie. The ladies need your help, though. Do you have wedding items that you’d be willing to lend or to donate for use in weddings held at the West of Ireland? All funds raised in the planning and holding of weddings go directly into the Project Children donation bin. Do you like planning events? Love weddings? Why not volunteer to help? Please IM Padula.

The past week was a phenomenal one for the West of Ireland. Our community was full of life and both new friends and old were exceptionally generous with donations. Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteers, or contributed. Some highlights of the week:

- Near Island was host to Gilbert Sapwood’s first official storytelling in Second Life. His choice of stories to share was outstanding and his delivery brought the tales to life. The sim reached capacity, and with the addition of remote listeners, Shoutcast reach capacity, too. We’ll have this fixed before Mr. Sapwood’s next event so that all who wish to enjoy his talents can.

- DJ Stev Foden hosted a four hour Saturday Beach Party on Bundoran that was a roaring success. Stev’s music collection is without parallel in Second Life and we danced to songs ranging from good old rock and roll to experimental music. Due to popular demand, Stev will now also be hosting a dance on Wedesdays at Noon on the deck of Nancy Blake’s.

- The Cezanne Barbosa exhibition opened at the Keeler Gallery to wide acclaim. Cezanne’s work captures the spirit and emotions of his subjects, whether landscapes or portraits. Please make sure to visit the Gallery (to the southeast of Nancy Blake’s) during the run of this exhibition. A percentage of any purchase made at the exhibition goes directly to Project Children.

- RL Dublin rocker, Mash Rhode, gave his first concert at Nancy Blake’s on Sunday night. Despite the impromptu nature of the performance, there was a packed house. Mash’s vocals and guitar were both outstanding during this solo performance. Look for announcements of other performance dates for Mash, possibly as early as the weekend.

- The West of Ireland hosted its first wedding this weekend! Selena Toland and Jimbo Qinin were joined in matrimony in a beautiful ceremony on Crab Island. A reception was then held in the new pavilion, designed and donated by Arch Angel Construction, in the center of the West of Ireland’s main island. Best wishes for health, happiness, and prosperity to the newlyweds. Since the pavilion was build, we’ve been receiving requests to host more weddings and events. Padula Bing has graciously agreed to become our wedding coordinator. Thank you, Padula! If you are interested in having your wedding in the West of Ireland, either in the pavilion or on one of the other sims, please contact Padula. Events can be hosted in exchange for a donation to Project Children. Additionally, if you happen to have wedding items in your inventory that you aren’t likely to use again, please consider donating or lending them for use at WOI events. Your donation or loan will directly result in donations to Project Children. Please contact Padula.
